BPL playoff scenarios -BPL2024 what the teams need to do

After the completion of the 32nd match in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024, no team has booked a place in playoffs yet, with Durdanto Dhaka already being knocked out of the race with just two points from their first ten matches. That leaves only six teams in the mix for the four playoff spots.

With a week's action to go in the opening round, here are the best qualification scenarios ahead of the last 10 round-robin games at BPL 2024

Rangpur Riders 9 7 2 0 14 1.870

Comilla Victorians 9 7 2 0 14 1.516

Rangpur Riders

  • Remaining fixtures
  • vs Chattogram Challengers, Feb 16
  • vs Fortune Barishal, Feb 19
  • vs Comilla Victorians, Feb 20

With six straight wins, the Rangpur Riders currently occupy the top position in the points table with 14 points to go with a healthy net run rate of 1.870 from their first nine matches. One win from their remaining three matches will assure them a playoff spot, while two will place them in the top two for Qualifier 1. Rangpur can qualify for finals even if they lose all their remaining matches if Khulna Tigers drop one game from their remaining fixtures.

Though the Riders are in a strong position to book a playoff berth they can be eliminated only if they lose each of their last three matches and if Fortune Barishal, Chattogram Challenger & Khulna Tigers surpass their points tally or match it with a better net run rate

Comilla Victorians

Remaining fixtures
  • vs Sylhet Strikers, Feb 19
  • vs Rangpur Riders, Feb 20
  • vs Fortune Barishal, Feb 21
After their win over Khulna Tigerslast night, Comilla Victorians currently take the second spot just behind table topper Rangpur Riders with seven wins (five consecutive wins) and two defeats from their first nine matches, racking up 14 points at a net run rate of 1.516. With three more league games to go for them, they are well-placed to book a playoff berth. One win from their remaining three matches will guarantee them a place in the playoffs, while two will give them the top two finish and will ensure their ticket to Qualifier 1 to be played on February 25 in Dhaka. Same as Riders, Comilla Victorians can still qualify for finals even if they lose all their remaining games if currently 6th placed Khulna Tigers lose one game at least from their remaining three fixtures.

The defending champions can be eliminated only if they lose all of their last three fixtures and if Fortune Barishal, Chattogram Challenger & Khulna Tigers cross Victorians' points tally or match it with a better net run rate.
Fortune Barishal

Remaining fixtures

  • vs Sylhet Strikers, Feb 17
  • vs Rangpur Riders, Feb 19
  • vs Comilla Victorians, Feb 21
The Fortune Barishal moved one spot up to secure the third position after their consecutive victory over Durdanto Dhaka on Wednesday. They have registered five wins and suffered four defeats, picking up 10 points at a net run rate of 0.475. Their fifth victory put them in the top four with a better NRR, replacing the Chattogram Challengers who also have 10 points but moved down to fourth position due to an inferior net run rate. The Barishals are facing one of the bottom team Sylhet Strikers and two of the top teams Riders & Comilla in their last three remaining fixtures in the league round.

The direct equation for Barishal to qualify for the playoff is to win all three games and qualify. In another scenario, Barishal can still progress to the last four if they win two only and hope the Khulna Tigers drop one match out of their three remaining games. In other scenarios - one win is also enough for Barishal to qualify if they win against Strikers and stay on 12 points & if Challengers lose two (including vs Tigers) to stay on 12 points or Khulna also drops at least one game and reach to 12 point mark, then in case of tie on 12 points between FB & CC or FB & KT, the Barishal can progress to the playoffs by better NRR if they can keep win/loss margins under control in their remaining games.

Two defeats out of their three remaining fixtures can eliminate the Fortune Barishal (12) if the Khulna Tigers win three out of their three matches and reach 14 points & if the Chattogram also wins two games (apart from vs Khulna) and reaches 14 points mark.

Chattogram Challengers

  • Remaining fixtures
  • vs Rangpur Riders, Feb 16
  • vs Durdanto Dhaka, Feb 17
  • vs Khulna Tigers, Feb 20
Chattogram Challengers maintained their position in the top four despite two back-to-back losses. With five wins and four defeats, they earned 10 points at a net run rate of -0.884. Challengers are on the same page as the Barishal's, with three league games to go for them, wins in all those matches will guarantee them a playoff spot. If they win two including one against the Khulna Tigers that also confirms their top-four finish.

In another scenario - one win is also enough for Challenges to qualify if they lose two (including vs Khulna) to stay on 12 points & if Barishal also loses two and stays on 12 points & if Khulna also reaches to 12 point mark by winning two games & if Sylhet Strikers also wins all of their matches and reaches to 12 points, then in case of a four-way tie on 12 points between FB, CC, KT & SS, the Barishal and the Chattogram (teams with better NRR currently) will progress to the top four for playoffs.

The Challengers can be eliminated if they lose two (including vs KT) out of their three remaining fixtures and stay on 12, and if Barishal wins two at least or Khulna Tigers wins all of their remaining matches and cross Chattogram to reach to 14 points.
Khulna Tigers

Remaining fixtures

  • vs Durdanto Dhaka, Feb 16
  • vs Chattogram Challengers, Feb 20
  • vs Sylhet Strikers, Feb 21
Khulna Tigers won their first four matches in a row, but now they suffer their fifth consecutive defeat. With eight points (four wins and five defeats) from seven matches at an NRR of -0.340, they are now in fifth spot in the standing. The Tigers were on the same page as the Fortune Barishal buttheir defeat against the reigning champion Comilla Victorians on Wednesday sent them on the battlefield against Chattogram. They have a slight advantage as they are facing two of the bottom teams Dhaka & Strikers and Challengers in their last three remaining fixtures in the league round because of their superior NRR than Challengers'.

The direct equation for Khulna to qualify for the playoff is to win all three games (14) and hope Fortune Barishal drop at least two from their remaining games and stays on 12 points or hope the Challengers drop one more game apart against them to stay on 12 points only.

One more defeat can eliminate the Tigers (12) if both Fortune Barishal and Chattogram win two out of their three remaining matches and reach to 14 points.

Sylhet Strikers

  • Remaining fixtures
  • vs Fortune Barishal, Feb 17
  • vs Comilla Victorians, Feb 19
  • vs Khulna Tigers, Feb 21
Last year's finalist Sylhet Strikers, after getting the second straight victory but still in sixth position in a seven-team tournament. Sylhet has six points in nine matches but a dismissal run rate of -1.054, which puts them in a spot of bother. They still can hope to have a top-four finish but for that, they would have to keep the winning run. The best case scenario for Sylhet to qualify for playoffs is to win all their three remaining matches and hope at least two of the below scenarios materialize - the Barishal or the Challengers lose all their matches and stay on 10 points or the Khulna Tigers drop their match against Durdanto Dhaka and stay on 10 points. One more defeat in the coming matches will likely eliminate the Strikers from the tournament.
