Maharashtra government approves 10 percent Maratha quota, for the third time in ten years; How to get benefitEknath Shinde government of Maharashtra has approved 10 percent Maratha reservation. This proposal got approval from the Eknath Shinde cabinet in the special session of the Maharashtra Assembly on Tuesday.Under this, 10 percent reservation will be given in government jobs to the 28 percent Maratha community present in the state.Apart from this, there is a proposal to give similar reservation in higher educational institutions also. This is the third time in the last decade that such a bill has been approved for the Maratha community in Maharashtra.

This proposal has been brought on the basis of the recommendation of the Maharashtra State Backward Classes Commission.According to the report of the Commission, 28 percent of the population in the state belongs to the Maratha community.Apart from this, it is believed that there are some extraordinary reasons for the backwardness of the Maratha community. In such a situation, the 50 percent limit of caste reservation can be crossed to give reservation to this category. In Maharashtra, 10 percent reservation is also being given to EWS.Including this, till now 62 percent quota is being given in the state. In this way, if Maratha reservation is also included then the total quota in the state will be 72 percent.

The Maharashtra Backward Classes Commission was formed in December under the leadership of retired judge Sunil Shukre. Its objective was to study the backwardness of the Maratha community in the state. There was a long movement under the leadership of agitator Manoj Jarange Patil demanding Maratha quota.Only after this the government constituted the commission. In this bill presented in Maharashtra, while proposing Maratha quota, it has been said that 69 percent reservation is being given in Tamil Nadu. The Indira Sawhney case was also mentioned in this bill, in which the case of Tamil Nadu was considered an exception.

Let us tell you that the Backward Classes Commission has conducted a survey of 1.58 lakh families across the state. After that a report was presented regarding the backwardness of the Maratha community. The report said that 21.22 percent people of Maratha community are living below the poverty line, while the state average is only 17.4 percent.Apart from this, 94 percent of the farmers who commit suicide in the state belong to the Maratha community.
